Broken Arm #5 (for Calissa)

Well, we had one long week! Friday night after gymnastics Travis and I decided to head out to dinner at Panera. It was later than usual because we had been looking into flying to Utah for Trav's sister's funeral, but just decided we didn't want to spend that much money. The weather had been bad all week and we were concerned about getting there. We had just sat down and had taken the first few bites of our dinner when we got a phone call from home. Parker was on the phone and said that Calissa had hurt her arm and then he handed her the phone. She was crying and said that it hurt bad and then I asked her to give the phone back to Parker. I then asked Parker how it looked and he said he didn't know, so I asked him to look at it. He then told us it looked bad. Travis went to get our food packed up and I started calling Kaiser to see if they had an appointment at 7:15 on a Friday night. (Fat chance!)

We arrived at home and got Calissa in the car (without even looking at her arm). I was still waiting to talk to an advice nurse on the phone. She answered about the time we were half way to the Walnut Creek ER. We took our chances with the ER and ended up staying for six hours! We waited in line and then the nurse that took our information took off Calissa's jacket and we got to see her arm for the first time. It was awful looking and obviously broken! Needless to say, with Calissa's crying and the severity of the break, we got in rather quickly. We moved into the triage room and once the nurse left to see how quickly they could get us a room (they were as full as they could be before diverting people to other ER's) Travis sank down on the ground. He was doing his best to not pass out! (It was pretty bad! The nurse we had in our room says she hasn't seen one that bad ever ... maybe she is new?) We had to wait about 20 minutes in a waiting room before a room was cleaned and ready to go. Of course, Calissa had to go to the bathroom and she had on her gymnastics leotard (from earlier in the day). It hurt to even move so we decided we had to cut off the shoulder strap so she could make it to the bathroom. Once we were settled in a room, I sent Travis home (after he gave her a blessing). I figured since we were driving to Utah the next day it would be better for him to get some sleep!
Here is Calissa with a brave smile for the camera as she was getting settled. Once we found America's Funniest Home Videos on the TV she was feeling better. (At least it distracted her from the pain and what was coming!)
I didn't get a great picture of her arm since it hurt too much to move it. (I tried to get a picture of the x-ray, but they forgot to give it to me before we left and it was already 2:30 in the morning. I decided to not go back, but will try to get a copy of the x-ray tomorrow and post it). Notice the bend in her arm. It looked way worse than the picture!

They needed an accurate weight for her so they could start an iv with morphine. They said that they had a scale on the bed and they could do it that way. I stood back and it said that she weighed 66 pounds! I told them that she was only 42 or 43 pounds and that wasn't right. They picked up her jacket and said that didn't weight 20 pounds. (Really?) Finally they brought in a scale and she got on (in tons of pain) and it said she was 46. Oops! Glad I was there to set them straight. That is a HUGE difference on a kid that size! We were just getting ready for the iv when they came and took her to x-ray.
After a painful set of x-rays where they saw that both bones in her forearm were broken we got ready for the ortho team and doctor to re-set the bones.
Here is Calissa with her iv, blood pressure cuff, heart rate monitor and oxygen. She was such a trooper and was loving watching AFV over and over again! (Thank goodness for that!) Also, the morphine was such a blessing! They used conscious sedation to re-set her bones. It was not fun! She screamed and they just kept giving her more medication. She was soooo emotional after it was over and cried and talked nonstop once they were done. They moved the bones back into place, but they kept slipping out again so they had to keep pressure on them until the plaster dried. After it was over while the nurse monitored her vitals for the next 1/2 hour she talked nonstop and kept crying. She cried about thinking that the activity day girls were going to give her dad a real heart-attack, she cried about her show she was watching on TV. She was really quite funny, but it was so sad! Once the nurse left and we finally got a 2nd set of x-rays I put my foot down and finally turned off the TV at 1:30 in the morning. We were discharged about 2 am and called Trav to come and get us. After stopping by the pharmacy to pick up some pain medication, we were back home a little after 2:30 am. (I was finally to sleep about 3:30). 8 am came pretty early and after packing we headed off on our way about 10:30 am.

Calissa got some much needed sleep in the car. It was probably good for her to sit still, sleep and keep her arm elevated for the whole day! Chain requirements were lifted over Donner about an hour before we got there. There was still snow and quite a bit of traffic, but we made it. Once we hit Reno it was smooth sailing until we hit a couple of blizzards on either side of Elko! We arrived in Bountiful about 10 PM or so local time in the middle of another blizzard. Luckily the snow plow had just gone around or we wouldn't have made it up to Travis' parent's house. Needless to say, we were exhausted, but happy to be safe in Utah with family!

Heart Attack for the Bishop

Don't worry too much about the title of this post. (Although Calissa did the following night, but that's the next post). The Activity Day girls surprised Travis with a heart attack on Thursday. He came home from work to find this on our front door and all over the front of our house. They also brought him cookies to help celebrate his birthday!

It was so fun! He also came home to Valentine cookies from the Smith Family and a black dress shirt (in honor of his 40 birthday) from the Bishopric. It was fun to have it up, but we had to take it down before we headed off to Utah on Saturday.

Look Who's 40

Travis celebrated his 40th birthday on February 16th! He was freshly sunburned after a weekend of golf in Scottsdale, AZ and was shocked after finding out his older sister Monique had passed away the day before. It was a hard day, but we celebrated as best as we could. We started off with the traditional cinnamon rolls for breakfast.
(Only 4 candles instead of 40. We didn't think 40 would fit!)

He had a super busy day at work and then we enjoyed Tahoe Joe's for dinner with the family.

Once home, Drew, Tina, Christopher and Lindsay surprised us to share in his day.

Travis is a wonderful husband and father.
We are lucky to have him ... even if he is getting old! :)

Living the Dream in Scottsdale

Our annual trip to Scottsdale with myself and Jen's three brothers brought fun times, laughs, and memories. It was a good chance to celebrate my 40th birthday as well.

Jen's brother Kevin was able to get us a great deal on both the resort and the golf since his wife's sister is married to a Marriott. The Executive Suite usually goes for $600+ per night and we got it for $200 and the golf was discounted from $200 to $80. So, we were living the dream without having to pay nightmare prices. The balcony outside the room was about 30-feet long! Being the old man of the group, I got the king-size bed and the plush room -- BJ slept on the fold-out couch and Drew and Kevin had an adjoining room with two queen beds. It was very nice although we didn't spend a whole lot of time in the rooms. Here are a few pictures of the balcony, the view from the balcony, and the suite.

Notice the "ghost" of BJ in the glass of the shower.

We got to the resort just in time to catch our first 18-holes. It took me a while to get going (I think I got a 12 on the first hole) but things went better after a few holes. My best round was a 92 on the 2nd day, which was strange because that was the course with 106 bunkers. Kevin ended up with the lowest combined score from the three days.

Besides the three rounds of golf, we went to pizza one night and Benihana's the next and also were able to catch a movie. I left my phone on the bench at pizza and realized it about 30 minutes later. We called and they said they couldn't find it but we went back anyway and it was sitting right there on the bench in plain sight! They said they thought we were talking about a different booth. Glad we went back...

At Benihana's, we shared some sushi along with our regular meal and I shared my birthday celebration with a young girl that was also sitting at our table. I actually ended up celebrating my birthday at Benihana's three times during February (once with my family, once with Jen's brothers, and once with co-workers)!

There are always funny moments when the four of us get together to go golfing and this year was no exception. The top 2 funny moments from this year's trip were Drew's squirrel murder and BJ's ricochet shot into a backyard.

I was teeing off on the 10th hole and looked over to see a smashed ground squirrel underneath Drew & Kevin's golf cart. I said, "Drew, you just killed that ground squirrel!" To which he replied, "No, I didn't." So I said, "Well, BJ and I didn't see a dead squirrel when we drove by a couple seconds before you, it's between your front tire and back tire, clearly has fresh blood, and there's blood all over your front tire. If we were in a court of law, you'd be guilty every time." He finally agreed he must have done it though he never saw the squirrel. He moved his cart a few feet and then as we were discussing it, the cart lady who sells snacks drove up and parked right on top of the squirrel. After we declined to buy anything (I mean, who was hungry after that?), she drove off and peeled out right on the squirrel. Blood and guts everywhere -- it was very disgusting but was quite the memory.

A few holes later, on a par 3, BJ somehow shanked his drive right into a tree about 20 yards in front of us and to the right. The ball ricocheted off the tree and headed straight into a backyard. We all cringed but somehow the golf ball managed to avoid the swimming pool, all windows, and the house and bounced harmlessly into the gravel. Being right next to the tee box, we figured the homeowners probably thought they were safe. They were until we came by...

Here are Jen's three brothers as we are having lunch on our last day in Arizona.

Anyhow, it was lots of fun and was a great way to spend the last few days of my 30's. Thanks for the memories, guys! Can't wait until next year.

Science Fair

Conner came up with a great idea for a science fair project all by himself. He decided to find out if the shape of an ice cube effected how fast it melted. I ordered some ice cube trays and he did everything else.He added one tablespoon of water for each ice cube.
After they were frozen, he popped them out, labeled them and then kept track of how long it took them to melt.

Just getting started.
All melted.

Here are the ice cube trays. A heart, cube, fish and pineapple.

Here's his completed project.

Here's his honorable mention. They had 1st-5th place and then 6 honorable mentions (out of 100 kids). He did a great job and we were proud of him for doing it all on his own! Congratulations Conner!

A Glorious Day!

Days like yesterday are one great thing about living in the Bay Area! It was 70+ degrees and gorgeous out. The hills are turning green and spring is in the air. This is one of my favorite times of year in the Bay Area. After spending the morning cleaning the house, watching some college basketball, grocery shopping (the day before the Super Bowl was a little crazy) and working on the science fair project we decided to head out on a bike ride. Here are the kids after a couple of miles.

Along the way we saw three deer.
(You may need to click on the picture for a closer view)

Then, we headed to Benihana to celebrate Trav's birthday. Parker wasn't feeling great and decided not to come. Too bad ... it was so yummy!
Here are Conner and Grandma.

Calissa (with a chunk of chicken in her mouth) and Grandpa (not looking at the camera)!

Trav and I

Happy 40th Birthday Trav (almost)!
After dinner we came home and had cookies and milk with the kids and watched Winter Wipeout. That is a funny show. Then, Trav and I relaxed and watched our new favorite show Castle after the kids went to bed. I wish all Saturdays could be as wonderful as this one was!
